A man who has dual British and American citizenship and who traveled to the United States to engage in sexual relations with a non-existent nine-year-old Mexican boy has now been sentenced to 13 years in federal prison. The sentencing of Paul Charles Wilkins, 70, capped off a perverse odyssey that began in February of last year.
Wilkins was already a known quantity in Great Britain for his offensive desires. In 2011, Wilkins was jailed for 56 months for making and distributing pornography involving both dead and alive animals, as well as children (as young as infants).
After Wilkins was first arrested in February, he told an official from the Department of Homeland Security that he had originally traveled to Palm Springs to meet up with a group that allegedly was a “club” which molested young boys.
Wilkins had a plan in place to meet with a man and to take advantage of his 10 and 12-year-old sons at the Camino Del Sol Apartments on Racquet Club Drive. The plan for Wilkins fell apart because the man, who was fictional, ceased communications with Wilkins soon after he arrived in the United States.
Boy Lovers Club
Paul Wilkins was also involved in an online group that links men who are interested in sex with children so, like a typical sick pedophile, he was undaunted. Undercover agents then actually helped him set up a meeting with the Mexican boy, 9, who was supposedly working to provide money for his family back in his home country.
The meeting originally went down on February 11, 2016, and Wilkins quickly realized that there was no nine-year-old boy. Instead, federal agents were waiting for him. Wilkins told these agents that he had been in contact with several members of the “Boy Lovers Club” for “months at a time.”
When he was arrested, he was also waiting on a contact to get him in touch with more young boys which he wanted to molest.
Thom Mrozek was a public affairs officer from the U.S. Attorneys office, and noted how they did not plan to make any extra arrests at the time. They arguably dropped the ball on that count, but Wilkins was ordered held without bond at the time. Interestingly enough, Wilkins was searched by U.S.
Customs officers because of his previous sexual offenses in Great Britain, but they failed to find anything suspicious. However, Paul Wilkins was actually able to transport a laptop full of morbid child pornography anyway.
Details of the Sting
After one agent played the role of a “pimp”, Wilkins agreed to meet the nine-year-old Mexican boy in order to take advantage of him. Wilkins was arrested at a rented Palm Springs apartment and he further dug himself a hole by claiming he thought the boy he was meeting was 16. As if the situation was not bad enough for him.
He eventually admitted that he knew well that the boy was only nine. Wilkins originally had a number of charges, including transporting child pornography. The man pleaded guilty to the transporting child porn charge under a plea agreement back in September. This 13-year prison sentence is essentially a life term for Wilkins, since he is already in his seventies.
A Long Prison Sentence for Wilkins
U.S. Attorney Eileen M. Decker said that:
This defendant persistently engaged in sexual exploitation of children. Today’s sentence ensures that children will be protected from his abhorrent conduct for many years.
Besides his 13-year sentence, Wilkins is also going to be ordered to pay a $25,000 fine and he will now be supervised for the rest of his life if he is ever released.
This just goes to show you that if you are looking at taking advantage of children, you will eventually be found and punished accordingly. It’s a sad end to a sad story, but it’s still fortunate to conclude that kids are now a bit safer thanks to the police putting one more dangerous man behind bars.
