Ryan Lochte is no stranger to the spotlight these days, but now he is under the light for a more positive reason: his recent engagement.
Right in the middle of his rehearsal for Dancing With the Stars, Lochte decides to propose to his girlfriend, Kayla Rae Reid, reported E Online.
The couple posted a picture of the happy moment on their Instagram and then again later on a beautiful hilltop in California, reported ABC News.
Reid is a former Playmate and has stood by Lochte after his recent scandal with the Rio Olympics 2016, says ABC News. During an interview with USA Today, Lochte had hinted that a proposal was in the works and the public would see one soon enough.
Ryan Lochte is already under suspension for ten months after his over exaggeration of the incident that took place during the Rio Olympics in 2016, states ABC News. However, this is a happy moment for the couple that helps them put behind the mess of Rio.
The couple has only been dating since January of 2016, according to CNN. They met at a Hollywood nightclub, and Reid has been a supportive girlfriend of Lochte’s career and everything going on in his life. Lochte states that he realized Reid was the right woman for him after she stood by him after Rio.
The engagement is a surprise to some of Lochte’s fans, says E Online. After all, there was speculation that Lochte was single when he was swimming in the Rio Olympics.
About Lochte’s Recent Scandal
Ryan Lochte was charged by the Brazilian authorities back in August of this year for falsely reporting a crime. The Rio Police Department’s police chief had requested a letter to be sent to Lochte after he fled the country that stated his charges and the legal process of Rio. The medalist was summoned to Rio, says NPR.
While he has not yet been convicted in the country, Lochte still received a punishment from the United States Olympic Committee. After his drunken night, says NY Times, he was sentenced to a 10-month suspension from all domestic and international competitions. The measure prevents him from taking part in the 2017 world championships, which is a criterion for the American team.
Lochte’s failure to give an accurate and honest account of what happened that night in Rio is why he faces so much scrutiny and punishments. His story changed numerous times, and once he made it to the United States, it continued to change. Brazilian authorities had started their investigation, reported the NY Times, and weighed on whether or not formal charges should be brought against Lochte for his false claims.
As part of his 10-month suspension, Lochte will lose his $3,500 per month USA Swimming stipend, reports NY Times. However, he will still get a six-figure fee for dancing on the hit show, Dancing With the Stars.
